Overview

This programme is for you if you are an international student who has successfully completed 2 or 3 years of degree studies in criminology or psychology (to HND or associate degree level), and you wish to complete your degree studies in the UK. It explores the practical interplay between the two disciplines. 

It is specifically designed for international students who wish to continue their studies at final year honours level in the UK whilst also developing academic and vocational English-medium skills. 

You will adjust to studying in the UK as you earn a full honours degree and develop the skills and knowledge needed to continue to further postgraduate study in English or English-medium work.This degree prepares you for further study at master’s level in the UK.  

On this programme you will:

  • Develop the academic and communication skills you need to perform at postgraduate level in English or in a criminology role which needs English.
  • Gain knowledge of key issues and debates, consider how society manages crime and criminals, and explore the broad concepts that underpin human rights, diversity, and duty of care.

You will study six modules over two semesters. Your study will give you the 120 credits necessary to achieve a full UK degree (BSc (Hons) Criminology (International Route)). The credits are made up as follows.

Modules

This list is indicative and subject to change.

Academic English 1

This module develops your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in academic contexts.

For example, you learn how to structure and write essays using appropriate academic language, how to read critically and develop your speaking skills by taking part in group discussions. 

Academic English 2

In this module, the focus in on developing your skills to write at length in academic settings in English and on selecting and critically evaluating appropriate texts in English to support your studies. 

English for International Business Communication

This is a practical module which prepares you to use English vocationally in a world where English is the main medium of international communication.

For example, you explore and learn to produce emails, job interview ‘pitches’, business leaflets and marketing presentations as well as take part in a range of business meetings. 

Young People and Crime

You will examine the factors that contribute to young people becoming involved in crime and consider crimes committed against them. You will explore the Youth Justice System in the UK and the interventions offered to young people to reduce their offending behaviour. 

Cybercrime and Security

In the age of technology and digitalisation, crime has become more diverse and often easy to commit. This module introduces cybercrime and cybersecurity, and will cover key emerging research on this contemporary topic. 

Research Project

This 45-credit module develops your skills as an independent researcher.

You learn to plan, carry out and evaluate your own small-scale research project in a topic related to Finance and Accounting. Through a series of practical tasks (often working with other students) you learn to identify an area for research, select reading materials, collect and analyse data and present your findings verbally and as a written research report. 

Teaching and Assessment

How you will learn

The programme is delivered in small classes (no more than 20 students for language-based classes) through workshop-based, interactive and developmental activities. 

You are assessed through a range of assignments including coursework, exams, presentations. groupwork and portfolios. 

In addition to International English classes which form part of your programme you also receive: 

  • Individual tutorial support (3 hours per semester), to help you plan, carry out and check your coursework.
  • A special international orientation programme to welcome you to the University.
  • Dedicated international advisers to help you with issues such as visas, opening a bank account and settling into life in the UK.
  • Social events to help you integrate into the University community and University life.

After your degree

This course helps you develop the academic and communication skills you need to succeed at postgraduate level. You will develop your criminology knowledge, cultural awareness, language ability and your ability to conduct independent research projects.  

This BSc (Hons) Criminology (International Route) degree can prepare you to apply for postgraduate programmes at a UK university. If you achieve a 2nd class honours degree or higher (50%+) we guarantee you entry to our postgraduate programmes. If you achieve a 2:1 or above, you will be eligible for Chichester postgraduate programme bursaries.

Entry Requirements

The programme is open only to those for whom English is not a first/main working language. 

Applicants must satisfy both conditions A and B: 

A: Level 5 qualification in criminology or psychology.  

B: IELTS 6.0 minimum (or recognised equivalent) with no element lower than 5.5. 

Applicants whose language does not yet meet requirement B are eligible for entry via successful completion of the University’s Pre-sessional programmes.
