Discover our MRes routes within Health
The MRes Health (named routes) programme is available to both NIHR funded and non-funded students. It is designed as an introduction to research practice either as a standalone qualification or as a precursor to studying for a PhD.
The two named routes are Social Care/Work and Integrated Caring Science.
The course focuses on developing your applied professional practice through fundamental and extended research methods training and a specialist choice from a suite of Masters modules.
NIHR INSIGHT Programme for South East Master’s Scholarships
Starting in September 2024, the University of Chichester is able to offer the MRes Health (named routes) as a fully funded course including support for the cost of living – the stipend- of c.£18k+ per year for your living costs (pro-rata for part-time students). This stipend is usually non-taxable and does not need to be paid back.
The Course
Work towards a significant independent research project
Provides a structured but flexible approach, consisting of three taught modules, two of which introduce you to research methods and concepts, the third is a discipline-specific module which can be undertaken in any field of related practice.
The precise choice will be discussed at interview. The final element will be a 120-credit research dissertation with a focus on strategic service outcomes.
Compulsory Modules
- Applied Research Skills – 20 credits
- Advanced Applied Research Skills – 20 credits
- Supervised Research Project – 120 credits.
Optional Module

Eligibility
To be able to apply, you’ll need to be:
- Nurses, midwives, social workers, social care, local authority or allied health professionals who are;
- working in the NHS
- working for a local authority
- working in social care, voluntary and community settings
- have been working for less than 5 years.
OR;
- an undergraduate student, postgraduate student, or early career professional
- working towards or have recently completed your professional registration with one of the approved regulatory bodies (not including doctors and dentists):
- Academy for Healthcare Science
- General Chiropractic Council
- General Dental Council
- General Medical Council
- General Optical Council
- General Osteopathic Council
- General Pharmaceutical Council
- Health and Care Professions Council
- Nursing and Midwifery Council
- Social Work England
- UK Public Health Register.

Entry Requirements
There is an expectation that candidates will:

- Be working in an allied health, social care, medical, social care and/or social work role, which demonstrates learning in a professional context
- Hold a degree and/or professional qualification at graduate level in a relevant field
- Have substantial practice experience in relevant settings.
They will also have:
- Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English language, mathematics and a science subject.
- An upper-second-class degree (or equivalent) in a related field is required. Related degrees include medical, sport and biomedical science, and science degrees such as biology, biochemistry, chemistry and physiology. Other degrees will be considered on an individual basis.
- In addition to the above, candidates are required to have practical experience relating to their research question.
- Applicants with extensive relevant industry experience with a 2.2 in a relevant field, and applicants with a first or upper second classification in a non-specified field with work experience in a relevant environment will be referred to the programme leader for consideration.
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will also be considered by the programme at the point of entry up to 60 credits.
- Interviews offered to applicants demonstrating understanding of the discipline study and commitment to studying this research focussed degree.
- For students whose first language is not English, there is a requirement to achieve an IELTS tariff of 7 with no individual component below 6.5.
